Happy and successful child- Developing child's potentials:

Snippets: - Successful education cannot happen in a piecemeal fashion. Taking an integrated approach can help children, with all their complexity and humanity, to develop to their full potential. - "Whole child” approach is not only desirable but necessary to ensure that children learn well.  - Our current education system mostly focuses on a narrow objective of children’s cognitive development with an emphasis on transmitting content knowledge, often to be memorized and repeated in the same form it was received.  - Many schools today are based on antiquated designs from the early 1900s that emulate the factory model, wherein students cycle through classrooms and teachers see hundreds of students a day. - Learning is not just Academic and rote learning. It's social, emotional, and academic.  - Children who had dropped out of high school in 25 urban, suburban, and rural communities, nearly half (47 percent) said a major reason for dropping out was that classrooms were not

Constructivism: How knowledge is constructed bit by bit:

Constructivism is a learning strategy that draws on students' existing knowledge, beliefs, and skills. With a constructivist approach, students synthesize new understanding from prior learning and new information. The constructivist teacher sets up problems and monitors student exploration, guides student inquiry, and promotes new patterns of thinking. Working mostly with raw data, primary sources, and interactive material, constructivist teaching asks students to work with their own data and learn to direct their own explorations. Ultimately, students begin to think of learning as accumulated, evolving knowledge. Constructivist approaches work well with learners of all ages, including adults. Child development charts and checklists:

Development is the term used to describe the changes in child’s  physical growth, as well as the ability to learn the social, emotional, behaviour, thinking and communication skills  the child needs for life. All of these areas are linked, and each depends on and influences the others. In the first five years of life, child’s brain develops more and faster  than at any other time in his life. The child’s early experiences – his relationships and the things he sees, hears, touches, smells and tastes – stimulate his brain, creating millions of connections. This is when the foundations for learning, health and behaviour throughout life are laid down. The charts (refer below link) lists the ‘typical’ child development by age and the possible implications if a child has reached or not reached typical developmental milestones. These charts can be used as a guide to screen if children are reaching roughly appropriate developmental milestones for their age. They can also be used to help pr

Encouraging natural ways of learning- Alliance for Self Directed Education:

Imagine what would happen if, instead of sending children to conventional schools where their natural ways of learning are curtailed, are given an opportunity and resources to learn in a self directed and fun and curious way. Self Directed Learning provides them with the resources that would allow their curiosity, playfulness, and other natural ways of learning to flourish. The  Alliance for Self-Directed Education ( ASDE ) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to normalizing and legitimizing Self-Directed Education. The motivating forces for self directed learning include curiosity, playfulness, and sociability—which promote all sorts of endeavors from which people learn. Imposed schooling is generally aimed at enhancing conformity rather than uniqueness, and it operates by suppressing, rather than nurturing, the natural drives of curiosity, playfulness, and sociability. Train your Children in the way of the righteous:

Dear Parents, HABITS THAT SHOW IMPROPER UPBRINGING OF CHILDREN. Please, carefully look at the list below and identify where you may want to make amends on yourself or on the young ones you are bringing up. Children, if not properly groomed may never get to the top in life, even if both parents are at the top of their careers. Manners take you to where your education can't irrespective of your status, wealth or your reach or influence: 1) Going to your child's school indecently dressed. (Think again). 2) Speaking rashly to your child's teacher. 3) Cursing, using foul language or swearing words in front of your children. 4) Using makeup on children. 5) Dressing your little children up indecently (they loose their sense of Princesshood). 6) Putting earrings on your son's ears. 7) Your child holds the cup or glassware by the brim and you don't correct. 8) Your children don't greet and you just feel they will come around one day because they have a mood s

The Importance of Being Bored:

_ ”In the past there was a small leisure class and a large working class. The leisure class enjoyed advantages for which there was no basis in social justice; this...caused it to invent theories by which to justify its privileges...(In) spite of this drawback it contributed nearly the whole of what we call civilization. It cultivated the arts and discovered the sciences; it wrote the books, invented the philosophies, and refined social relations...Without the leisure class mankind would never have emerged from barbarism.” _ (Bertrand Russell). Children these days seem to be occupied all the time. They are either studying and working, or staring at smartphones, listening to music, or playing video games. There is a constant barrage of external stimuli that never seems to stop. And I would like to suggest that this is not a good trend, for two important reasons. Image source: Medium.com Firstly, the vast majority of stimuli involves no content at all. Video channels and games targeting

Too much focus on indoor lessons may be doing more harm than good:

Snippets: - What if I tell you to select one option among two, Number 1. Mentally imagining about a plant and Number 2. You are given an opportunity to come outside your home and see the plant and it's process and parts naturally, which option will you select? - When we are outdoor, observing things naturally, gives us more confidence that we’re seeing a real cause-and-effect relationship. - Nature can be a very powerful learning resource. - Outdoor learning develops academics too. - Advantages of outdoor learning/learning with nature: ✓ Nature has a rejuvenating effect on attention; ✓ Relieves stress; ✓ Boosts self-discipline; ✓ Increases physical activity and fitness; ✓ Promotes student self-motivation, ✓ Enjoyment, and ✓ Engagement. - One researcher quotes “If something not only makes a student more attentive, but also less stressed and more interested, then you can see how it could have a large effect on their learning" . Making school feel great:

How has your school year been so far? Challenging? Rewarding? Frustrating? Maybe a bit of all three? As you begin planning for next year, how can you make next year more successful and enjoyable? We asked longtime teacher and FISH! facilitator Steve Mintz, who has helped hundreds of schools build stronger cultures, for his thoughts: “When I visit schools preparing for a new year, they’re mostly focused on technology, first aid training and so on—all important but functional tasks. “But they are not as focused on how to  make our school feel great  for every student and staff member. That’s the foundation of everything we want to achieve. Relationships are key “Educators know they  need the human element  but so many demands push that aside. People talk about working ‘smarter, not harder.’ What they mean is ‘We have to do more and we don’t much time to do it.’ The danger is if those demands squash people’s spirits. “As educators, we do what we do because  we want to help students
