Role of a school leader in effective school management:

' A confident leader with a positive mindset takes the risks when needed and thinks outside the box' 'Without doing things differently, your school is unlikely to succeed, or last'.  A school leader should have attributes like, resilience, flexibility, persistence, entrepreneurial mindset and the skills like relationship management, social awareness and focus. As a leader, we all clearly see where o ur school would be in the next five years but the ideal way forward or need is to communicate this to everyone involved in the tasks to make it happen. Every staff at our school campus should understand how each of their contribution is important to the overall school success and of the school vision achievement. A school leader should demonstrate that they are all important, this will make the staff feel valued.  There are lot of cultural and generational changes in the way people think and take the things forward. For leading these changes from front end, the school leade

What if somebody labelled you a 'Slow Learner':

 - You will realise many aspects after reading this.  *How to remove ur label given by others*?(Overcoming blindspots) Worth reading...  I sat in my chair quietly next to my Mom & Dad as my grade 4 teacher gave them an update on my progress at school. “your child is a slow learner” said the school teacher quietly. I held my breath & sank a little lower into my chair. I looked up at my dad to see if he was in trouble. My father glanced down, smiled & gave me a quick wink. On the way home from the Parent-Teacher meeting, I thought about what Mrs. Shastri had called me – ‘Slow Learner’. Deep down I knew that what she really meant was that I was dumb. Later that evening, my Mom & Dad came into my room carrying a piece of paper & a pen. They sat down on the side of the bed & said, “Want to talk to you about what Mrs. Shastri said today.” “A Slow Learner” I replied. I had already taken the words to heart. “That’s right” said my dad as my mother wrote the words ‘Slow L

How adults' interaction with children influences child's behaviour:

“Please put your shoes on- we’re going out.” How we view a ‘command’: Put your shoes on.  How children’s brains perceive it: 1- Dad/Mom is saying something.  2- Stop focusing on what I’m doing.  3- Listen to my parent.  4- Now I don’t know what they said.  5- Go back to the original task.  6- Almost start the task.  7- Parent says put on shoes.  8- I need to stop doing what I’m doing.  The following steps make it seem daunting: 9- I have to get up.  10- I have to look for shoes.  11- I have to be fast.  12- What if I’m not fast enough 13- Where do I begin to look for my shoes? 14- There’s a lot of stuff everywhere. 15- There are a lot of shoes.  16- I have to narrow down mine.  13- I’m feeling overwhelmed  14- I need more time to process this  15- I need help  Our response: Get irritated and upset that they didn’t do it right away  Their brain’s response: Activate stress response. Shut down PFC (prefrontal cortex where thinking happens) Outcome: Shoe-wearing process has completely sta

Mathematics too requires reading and comprehension skills to understand the problem better-

- Many students are fearful of mathematics classes, its very important for a teacher to understand each student's challenge towards math learning. One challenge is of reading and comprehension. As in language, in mathematics too the reading and comprehension skills are crucial.  Many teachers have realised that few children never utilized most of their skills, especially reading and comprehension skills. It is also seen that most students are so stressed about the steps to be written and the operation to be used that they fail to realize that simply reading and understanding the problem will help them actually solve it. And this way they will understand the step to be followed in solving the problem.  While teaching mathematics it is also helpful to relate to real life situations and examples. Mathematics can help to assess multiple skills and abilities in children. Teachers should adopt activity based teaching pedagogy and move out of being a plain and very normal pedagogy.  Throu
