Your kids can have 'n' number of friends but have only ONE set of parents:

- Have we failed in bringing up our ‘modern’ kids?  Have we ever wondered; Why is it that the youngsters of the so called modern world behave the way they are behaving now a days? Have we given them too much freedom to express? Have we failed to discipline and give them the right values? *Is it right to treat children as friends?* Think of it this way, they have lots of friends. But they have only one set of parents. If they don’t do ‘parenting’, who will? Today the *‘self-esteem’* of even a new born or an infant is being talked about; but what about the self-esteem of the parents? Are they supposed to just fan the egos of their children, while the children don’t care two hoots about theirs? Often parents stop by telling, ''Where will you find obedient children in these times?”  Why? If we need to teach children about self-respect, self-esteem and self-confidence, we also need to tell them that howsoever big and rich and famous they may be, their parents shall always be their p

Loss of Learning during the Pandemic- A report from Azim Premji University:

-   'One complete academic year has elapsed in this manner, with almost no or little curricular learning in the current class. But this is only one kind of loss of learning. Equally alarming is the widespread phenomenon of ‘forgetting’ by students of learning from the previous class – this is regression in their curricular learning'.  'This study, undertaken in January 2021, reveals the extent and nature of the ‘forgetting/ regression’ kind of learning loss (i.e. what was learnt earlier but has now been lost)  among children in public schools across primary classes because of school closure  during the COVID-19 pandemic'. Key findings: - 92% of children on an average have lost at least one specific language ability from  the previous year across all classes. - 82% of children on an average have lost at least one specific mathematical ability  from the previous year across all classes. 'Studies across the world have clearly indicated that school closures have signifi

10 things to protect your child from social media:

- Did you know?  Bill Gates did not give his children cell phones until they were 14 years old.  And even Apple's Steve Jobs was conscious of his children's phone usage. A large number of CEOs and prominent figures of Silicon Valley companies significantly reduce the time their children spend in contact with technology. How addicted are your children to cell phone? How much time do they spend in front of a screen? Would you let your children do the same? Or are you following strategies to make them use cell phone only for necessary use. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends to limit technology according to the age of the children, since there is a great fear that the use of the devices will become compulsive and uncontrolled. There are people who compare social media to drugs, by quoting that social media makes children addicted to their phones, which becomes a habit from which it is difficult to come out. What is social media? Social media is any digital tool that allo

Parenting requires parents to have patience:

- Parenting is no easy task and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. It takes patience, time, and a lot of trial and error to figure out what will work for your family. But as any parent will tell you, it can be worth the effort. Sometimes parents think they need to correct every little thing their children do or they’ll never learn right from wrong. But as adults we know that this isn’t the case. If we make an error at work, we don’t get corrected by our boss every time we do it – we just try not to repeat it.  Parents have a very important role in their child's wellbeing and character. Parents are the first teachers of children. How parents deal with children everyday is very crucial. Here are some ways that patience in parenting can help your family. The Best Ways to Keep Your Patience as a Parent. Why do we need to cultivate patience? What is the best way to cultivate patience as a parent? Follow the 5 quick rules below: 1. Don't be quick to anger.  Children don't re

With foreign tongue we could produce English speaking labour class but not innovators and intellectuals:

-  Mother tongue is the language which a child starts hearing after being born and thus, it also helps in providing a definite shape to child's emotions and thoughts. Learning in our mother tongue also is crucial in enhancing other skills such as critical thinking, skills to learn a second language and literacy skills. Just a thought, think about it; if regional medium/ mother tongue schools are shut down who will know about the torch bearers of the tribe, and great literary work and scientific thoughts.  Help to protect our mother tongue schools either Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, or Urdu. The best education could only be given in mother tongue. This has been extensively researched and approved by UNICEF.  According to UNICEF, countries who teach their children in foreign language like English failed to progress. We could produce English speaking labour class but not innovators and intellectuals. Everyone talk about Finland. Children in Finland, study all the subjects in Finnish, the

Future of shapes is shaping the future:

-  By: Swarna Krishnan It was one of my regular thirty-minute online class for Class 3 and I had planned to introduce Equilateral triangles to the students. To make it interesting, I had asked them to keep a few matchsticks handy for the class. In one of my previous sessions, I had already introduced the concept of triangle, as a closed figure bounded by 3 straight lines. So, I decided to start this class by asking them to make a triangle using 3 matchsticks. Once the students made the triangle, I asked them to leave it undisturbed for the rest of the class.  Then, I showed them 2 triangles on the screen - a 6-stick triangle and a 9-stick triangle. I was keen to know their observations about the 2 triangles. When asked, they started with answers like “triangles made of match sticks”, “big triangle”, “small triangle” etc. When they started observing closely, one student said, “left side and right side of the triangle have same number of sticks” and another student said, “right side an

Children's early development and the need for quality pre-schooling:

-  Internationally there is a strong push for educating children from an early age, as early years are very impactful in teaching and learning. Teaching and learning do not mean only blackboard, chalk piece, textbooks and exams, in contrast, there is more to it. In India, there are many interventions towards early literacy, but the discussion or research about how to teach reading-writing to young children need to be more focused to cater to each age group. The primary objective of reading is not to rote learn and present in the exam, but the primary objective of reading is meaning-making. Through the construction of meaning, it is also expected that the reader should think critically about the thoughts and information expressed in the text. Currently, if we look at our classrooms these aspects are completely neglected in the prevalent skill-based literacy instruction. Skills-based instruction vs. whole language: Skills-based instruction is a traditional theory of learning to rea
