One expressed that they should have informed about career opportunities which are available for them. Another said that they should have taught report, essay writing, and expression techniques. Toppers feel that schools stuck to text books and did not prepare for challenges to face outside.  The report says, 'While  board toppers marks and ranks may have given them a head start, looking back, they now see crucial gaps in their school curriculum and in the way they

CBSE manual for mental health and wellbeing:

  - Children's success in school and life is directly linked to their mental health. Many of us either do not understand the connection or just ignore it. Mental health affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.  There is a very crucial need to understand this area of children at school. This is a manual (See at the end) published by CBSE board, which lays down perspectives on MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING. The 21st century emerging challenges have necessitated that the schools also shift the focus to the psychosocial needs of students and take care of the overall wellbeing.   The schools should take actions and adopt strategies for identification and prevention of various mental health and wellbeing needs, which would create safe school environment. The priority in schools should mainly be about early identification at the individual and systemic level. This document attempts to align the role and impor

Teachers' training facilitation experience by Resource persons of Azim Premji Foundation:

 - 'Any training and facilitation should not be a one-shot engagement, even if it is spread over two weeks may not be enough to change the beliefs of all teachers. We need to present the same ideas in multiple forms to strengthen the understanding so that it translates into teachers’ practice'. 'We need to have an effective planning if the training is done online. Only voice could create boredom in the listeners on an online trainings. Participants may lose interest if there is only one facilitator, so it is better to involve two or three people to facilitate the session. And also include interaction among participants with few videos and activities. One of the most important elements in any teacher professional development program is student learning. Teachers must be made to think and deliberate around it. For this to happen, we should consciously include classroom scenarios in the beginning and make teachers think about their own students. This will help teachers to con

Entrance exam coaching centers and a caution for parents:

- You would have stared at the article heading by seeing Crores, Google and age 6 written on the thumbnail picture of the article. This is how sometimes parents get misled by ads regarding coaching classes which charge lakhs of rupees as fee and promise an impossible success, which is 200% impossible to be achieved by all children, instead a small percentage of children might achieve the advertised target. Many parents want their children to get into good professions when they grow up. For the children to get into good professions, they need to get a good education, in order to get a good education they need to get into good universities/academies, in order to get into a good university/academy a child has to get a good competitive entrance exam score. In order for children to get a good competitive exam score, children have to get good foundational education and training. Thus parents put lakhs of rupees into the competitive exams coaching classes, hoping to see the magic. Many coach

A child's nutrition and health are directly connected to child's learning:

 - Many of the education programs are focusing on academic development, and do not look at other factors which are necessary for learning. There are important factors like socioeconomic, socioemotional, health, nutrition etc. which are necessary for an effective learning to happen.  In this article we are focusing on child's nurtrition and it's connection to learning. A child's nutrition and health are directly connected to child's learning. The three things have to be focused by a preschool environment. H- Health N- Nutrition E- Education The child's learning is also connected to the child's brain engagement. If a child has to learn effectively the brain has to receive balanced and sufficient energy. For brain to receive a sufficient energy, the proper nutrition (Food intake) is necessary. Therefore the child's learning is directly connected to the child's nutrition. A child's learning happens in a sequence of few aspects, i.e. - Focus (Concentratio

Courses which can be opted in medical career instead of MBBS:

- Every job which is available on earth has got some value to society. According to the jobs, there are college degrees to prepare the students. When it comes to careers especially in India, the MBBS course is overvalued. The overvaluation is caused by the plethoric ( excessive)  attraction and seat demand  this degree has gained from a few decades. In recent years this degree has become something like 'Shahi' (Royal). This degree more than a societal need-based has become a pride or job guarantee scheme (But things have worsened in this career aftermath MBBS degree too).  This degree as said has attracted a royal tag which comes with a tittle ‘Dr Saab’ or ‘Dr Ji’ or 'Doctorre' in Kannada. Because of all these nonchannelized career guidance or no guidance at all, many important jobs of a hospital which are also very important are undervalued. At the same time, the need for an  MBBS degree is not ignored, this is a very crucial healthcare qualification in our health syst

The role of a school counsellor in tackling the challenges faced by students, and how bullying is affecting at school (Part 1.13):

- There are multiple roles a counsellor does for student development at school- academic performance counselling, family related counselling, career counselling, school adjustment related aspects and so on. One of the major tasks for a school counsellor is also to help a child plan for his future, whether that means continuing on to higher education, doing entrepreneurship, entering the workforce and so on. Ideally, a school counsellor should be involved with this process since a student entered school, providing guidance and study skills and intervening during times of poor or declining school performance. As we discussed in our previous articles, there are myriad challenges which counsellors face to discharge their duties. As reported in an article from UWA online of USA, there are some school counsellors who go an extra mile, even accompany students on college visits and walk them through the application process (uwa.edu, N.A) . This cannot be possible in all situations, as coun

National Education Day- 11th November, Remembering Maulana Abul Kalam Azad:

 - National Education Day is celebrated across the country, every year on November 11 , to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s First Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad served the country from 1947 to 1958 as the first minister of Education in Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet. A reformer and the freedom fighter, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was not merely a scholar but committed to building of the nation through education. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was the man behind the IITs and many key institutes in the country. Here are 8 inspiring quotes from Maulana Abul Kalam Azad 1.” We must not for a moment forget, it is a birthright of every individual to receive at least the basic education without which he cannot fully discharge his duties as a citizen. 2. “Educationists should build the capacities of the spirit of inquiry, creativity, entrepreneurial and moral leadership among students and become their role model.” 3. “Climbing to the top demands stre

Challenges faced by school counsellors as per study undertaken in India (Part 1.12):--

 - Counselling skills are seen as an important area in educational institutions. The education boards like CBSE mandates schools to appoint counsellor. The schools which have appointed counsellors in the school environment, the counsellor face few challenges, as school involves multiple stakeholders- Teachers, Children, Parents, Management, Civil society (Civil society- When school is involved with collaborative programs with external institutions). There are some kinds of stigma attached to counsellor and counselling practices. When counsellor calls children to meet, they become very conscious to go to the counsellor even to have general interaction. Some responded that if a child goes to a dedicated counsellor, the child might think he has negativity in him. A counsellor said that rapport building takes much time. Children are afraid because they have misinformation about counselling. Class 1st to 5th children know counsellor as a Lifeskills teacher and not as a counsellor. It he

Children's wellbeing support by teachers, parents and principal (Part 1.11):

 -  Children’s wellbeing is necessary for a healthy and sustaining life. Schools also have a major role to play in child’s wellbeing as children spend much of their productive hours at school. At school, the wellbeing is not only the responsibility of counsellor but parents and teachers also. The parents and school should work together in collaboration. The approach from school is to console, convince and counsel the child as well as the parent. A well understanding and equipped teacher can support the children in many ways. Wellbeing support by teachers, parents and principal: Below are the roles played by these stakeholders for wellbeing support at school and home. Role of teachers: Teachers are role model, they influence children at the classroom in multiple aspects- behaviour, motivation, patience, career aspiration etc. The teacher is the first contact at the school environment to whom the children can easily reach. In my study teachers said that if they have prior knowled
