What is teacher appraisal?
Teacher Appraisal is a thorough yet supportive and developmental process designed to ensure that all teachers have the skill-competencies, and support they need to carry out their role effectively.
The regular appraisal helps to ensure that teachers are able to continue to improve their professional practice and to develop as teachers. Thereby developing student performance and behaviour.
Appraisal is performance management of teachers.
• First of all, I think since each school is a different eco system, the need of appraisal is definitely going to vary. So we should not cut paste any model.
Schools must have an annual appraisal process for teachers.
• Each school must scientifically identify as to WHY they want to appraise their teachers and then design it.
• Appraisal should be able to identify and assess the personality type of your teachers. Under; realistic, investigative, conventional, enterprising, social or artistic. It's important for role division and performance expectations.
• It should keenly assess their Planning; how are they planning their classroom, lessons, behavior, career etc
• Appraisal main body can be Teaching Practice; whether it's progressive or traditional, kind of r&d involved or not, teachers extra reading & knowledge etc.
• Finally, an appraisal should be backed by a solid scientific Feedback system; both from faculty and mainly from students. Exam results, meeting learning objectives and learning outcomes (which by the way are two different things).
• Aim should be to motivate teachers to motivate students.
• Connecting appraisal with teacher's yearly increment or bonus will be a ideal tool of salary increment.
Governing bodies must have a written appraisal policy for their teachers (including headteachers)
Objectives set must contribute to improving the education of pupils
Teachers must be given a written appraisal report which sets out, an assessment of their performance, an assessment of their training and development needs and a recommendation on pay progression
Appoint an external adviser to advise them with appraising the headteacher.
