This is the image of Fatima Sheikh. She is born on this day (9 January 1831) in Pune was an Indian educator and social reformer, who was a colleague of the social reformers Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule.
When Jyotirao and Savitribai were asked to vacate their ancestral house by Jyotirao’s father – as he was angry with the reform agenda of the couple – it was Fatima and her brother Usman Sheikh who opened the doors of their house for the Phules.
She is widely considered to be India’s first Muslim woman teacher. She taught at all five schools that the Phules went on to establish and she taught children of all religions and castes. Sheikh took part in the founding of two schools in Mumbai (Then Bombay) in 1851.
