Fukhr-ut-Tojjar Sir Hajee Ismail Sait: A Legacy of Business and Philanthropy

Fukhr-ut-Tojjar Sir Hajee Ismail Sait (1859-1934) was a prominent Indian businessman, philanthropist, and community leader who left an indelible mark on South India.

He was an Indian banker, businessman and community leader who served as a member of the Madras Legislative Council.

Born in Periyakulam, Tamil Nadu, Sait's entrepreneurial journey began early, driven by a strong work ethic and a keen business acumen.

A Business Empire Takes Shape

Sait's first venture, the "English Warehouse," proved to be a resounding success, catering to the needs of the British community in Bangalore. His entrepreneurial spirit, however, did not limit him to a single venture. He diversified into a wide range of businesses, including mines, and manufacturing units. His astute business decisions saw him rise to become one of the wealthiest merchants in South India.

Very quickly, Ismail Sait built on the success of his shop and diversified into an astonishing variety of businesses. At the age of 22, he became a director in the newly-established Carnatic Mills (which later merged with another mill to become the well-known Binny Mills). He supplied various provisions to the British army establishment in Bangalore, including horse gram. He traded in timber. He ran a carbonic acid manufacturing unit in Calcutta.

Also Ismail Sait served as Chairman and Director of the Mysore Bank Limited, Bhadrawathi Iron Works and the Mysore Government Sandalwood Factory. Sait also constructed a number of hospitals in Bangalore, Madras and Bombay.

Beyond Business: A Visionary Philanthropist

Sait's legacy extends far beyond his business accomplishments. He was a dedicated philanthropist who recognized the importance of education and social upliftment. He actively supported the establishment of educational institutions, advocated for women's education, and championed the cause of social reform.

Notable Contributions:

  • Gosha Hospital: Sait's significant contribution of Rs. 1,50,000 towards the construction of the Gosha Hospital in Bangalore ensured that women could access modern medical care.
  • Educational Support: Sait actively supported the development of educational institutions, recognizing their crucial role in the progress of the community.

Recognition and Honors:

Sait's contributions were widely recognized. He was honored with the title of Khan Bahadur in 1911 and knighted by the King of England in 1923. He also served as a member of the Madras Legislative Council, actively participating in public service.

A Lasting Legacy

Fukhr-ut-Tojjar Sir Hajee Ismail Sait's life serves as an inspiration. His entrepreneurial spirit, philanthropic endeavors, and commitment to social progress continue to inspire generations.

He remains a revered figure in the history of South India, remembered for his significant contributions to business, education, and community development.

Classroom: A place where the primary goal is not to fill a bucket, but to light a fire-

 - ### The Light in Their Eyes Do you remember it? That spark. The unbridled curiosity of a child who asks "why" for the tenth time, not to be difficult, but because their world is a universe of wonders waiting to be discovered. The five-year-old who spends an entire afternoon building a lopsided castle of mud and leaves, not for a grade, but for the sheer joy of creating. The eight-year-old who reads under the covers with a flashlight, lost in a world far beyond their bedroom walls. This is the light. It is the raw engine of passion, the bedrock of innovation, and the very soul of a lifelong learner. And I fear, with every fibre of my being, that our schools are becoming places where this light goes to die. Source: Gemini AI  We have, with the best of intentions, built a system that mistakes measurement for meaning. We have created a world within classroom walls where the landscape is paved with textbooks and the horizon is blocked by the looming shadow of the next exam. Chi...

Discipline rooted in connection builds emotional safety and also encourages internal motivation:

 - *“Discipline isn’t about control. It’s about connection.”* _This powerful statement shifts the traditional perspective of discipline from authority-based control to relationship-based guidance. True discipline is not about instilling fear or asserting dominance, it’s about helping someone grow by building trust, understanding, and connection._ 🧠 What It Means: • Control-based discipline says: “Do what I say, or face punishment.” • Connection-based discipline says: “I understand what you’re going through. Let’s learn from this together.” The goal is not to force obedience but to nurture self-discipline, empathy, and responsibility. 🌱 *_Example 1: A School Principal & a Misbehaving Student*_ • Control Approach: The principal suspends the student without asking why he was misbehaving. • Connection Approach: The principal calls the student in, sits beside him, and says, “You’re usually respectful. What happened today? Is something bothering you?” 🔁 *Outcome:* ...

Teaching children to be creative:

 - Creativity is the ability to think about a task or a problem in a new or different way, or the ability to use the imagination to generate new ideas.  'Creativity allows us to view and solve problems more openly and with innovation. Creativity opens the mind. A society that has lost touch with its creative side is an imprisoned society, in that generations of people may be closed minded'. Being creative means you are open to expressing yourself and investigating the world around you. It can also mean you work to find a new and better way of answering a question or solving a problem. Children who experience stress may experience health problems and develop a bad attitude toward learning. The researchers also found that spending too much time on homework meant that students were not meeting their developmental needs or cultivating other critical life skills. Students were more likely to forgo activities, stop seeing friends or family, and not participate in hobbies. Old one bu...

Challenges faced by school counsellors as per study undertaken in India (Part 1.12)--:

 - Counselling skills are seen as an important area in educational institutions. The education boards like CBSE mandates schools to appoint counsellor. The schools which have appointed counsellors in the school environment, the counsellor face few challenges, as school involves multiple stakeholders- Teachers, Children, Parents, Management, Civil society (Civil society- When school is involved with collaborative programs with external institutions). There are some kinds of stigma attached to counsellor and counselling practices. When counsellor calls children to meet, they become very conscious to go to the counsellor even to have general interaction. Some responded that if a child goes to a dedicated counsellor, the child might think he has negativity in him. A counsellor said that rapport building takes much time. Children are afraid because they have misinformation about counselling. Class 1st to 5th children know counsellor as a Lifeskills teacher and not as a counsellor. It he...
