This is an interesting article summarising the below diagram.
If you look at the above diagram description we can see two ways of looking at success, one angle thinks salary and job title will bring happiness and the second angle also considers salary and job title but these two things are only part of life, there are many things in addition to it, I.e physical health (healthy food, excercise, physical work etc), mental health (emotional regulation, anger management, relationship management etc), doing what you like, and free time to enjoy your hobbies and passion. In addition, also a career which gives you happiness, and the career which itself becomes your kind of hobby. There is a saying 'a person will be able to give his best only in the job which he loves'. It is important not only to get a job and good salary but also to know where we can fit best.
If you go to any classroom, famously you can hear children telling two aspirations of their career, i.e engineer and doctor. But only these two are not the mark of success. There are many many career options in different fields out there, which is in need and which are so much in demand, such as environmental science, social work, paramedical, journalism, geology, agricultural science, developmental studies, counselling therapy, education research, psychology etc. You can refer universities like TISS, Azim Premji University, IIM-B's program such as -Master of Management Studies (Public Policy).
If you randomly have to ask a parent about their aspirations and dreams for their children, they will say that child should study in a good school and go to a good college/university and eventually get into a high paying job with a pocketful of salary with a good title and position. By getting this, parents think that this will give happiness in the child's life and that he will be successful. No doubt these things are also necessary, but there are many things which are equally important.
Not very often parents are aware that there are so many things in life which actually leads to a happy life. A title can give a good position in the job and this also could bring a good salary. Its a universal fact that 💰 money can only fulfill the basic needs and material requirements and few luxury attainment, but money and job title itself cannot guarantee happiness. Parents should focus on sharpening skills such as communication, decision making, critical thinking, empathetic listening, gratitude etc.
Parents should focus that children are given opportunity to know what they are good at, and how to sharpen that skill and create the career opportunities through that skill and passion. In addition to book knowledge children should engage in some home assignments by parents whereby children can think and learn things which are not taught at school. From high school itself children should be aware what career they are trying to achieve. The school also should play a major role in organising career sessions to the children in High School itself and children should be made aware that only salary and job title will not give success, there are so many things to be successful, a balance of health, wealth, good character, pure thought, creative thinking, self management, expression skills etc etc.
By keeping above concerns at focus, many organisations have designed career as well self development programs for students as well as working professionals. Credence Learning Foundation also runs one such course known as self re-engineering.
