Charlotte Mason Method of Home Schooling_Few approaches:

Introduction

The education itself cannot be defined to be exclusive but it is, in fact, the most inclusive and dynamic. It is believed that education can be acquired through multi-dimensions and multi-sources. However, such multi-dimensions of the educational process has its own perfections at different levels. In addition, as education is about a large collection of information, a large source of information to be connected and facilitated to the children.

There are many philosophers, psychologists and educators who have discussed how to educate children. Among them is Charlotte Maria Shaw Mason who was an English educator in England at the turn of the twentieth century. She implemented a precise idea of education for the children. Her thoughts on education have significant connections to the reality of knowing the most existence based. She believed on independent and freedoms of education assuming that children have their own perfections.

Charlotte Mason was also a great educational thinker of the 19th century who believes on child’s autonomy of education as she quoted, “let children alone.. the education of habit is successful in so far as it enables the mother to let her children alone, not teasing them with perpetual commands and directions –a running fire of Do and Don’t; but letting them go their own way and grow, having first secured that they will go the right way and grow to the fruitful purpose. (Charlotte Mason).

Thus, this short write up would try to focus on a few insights of Charlotte Mason’s homeschooling education.

Charlotte Mason’s few Ideas on Education

Charlotte Mason has large educational ideas, she took six large volumes to complete her single educational topic. Her few ideas have been discussed below.

a.     Living books: Her idea of educational approach focus on living books, by this, she means that the mere a textbook without any historical facts and interesting stories can’t draw a child’s heart and mind. Instead, she recommends the books full of characterized stories that can touch the child’s mind and heart. In fact, it is connected to the child’s psychological perspectives, and today’s homeschooling can actually facilitate such books for the children.

b.     Narration: In simple word, it is meant to say as revision about the learnt lessons. In this approach, children are given full of information based on their learning competencies and later they will be asked to revise what they have just learnt. This approach would make children validate their learnings more correctly. Moreover, by doing this child would increase their writing skills, reading skills, painting skills etc.

c.      Short Lessons: Despite the long hour of lessons Charlotte recommends to have lessons for very short time (10-15 minutes). In fact, it is frequently observed that lessons for a long time do not make any sense to children, instead, they feel bore and learn nothing qualitatively. However, such lessons for a long hour is recommended for higher classes.

d.     Nature walks: The educational ideas of Charlotte Mason is not only on theoretical, however, but it is also connected to the reality. Considering this fact, she recommends for nature walks where children will have lots of ground reality experiences. In this approach, she distinguished between nature walks and nature talks. However, nature walks is recommended in this approach, as children’s visual understanding is more precise than talks and discussions.

e.     Daily walks: As Charlotte model of education is defined to be inclusive; she recommends having daily walks in order to have fresh air that would boost a child’s physical strengths. She believes physical fitness is connected to mental fitness.

f.       Free-Time Handicrafts: It is one of the most important aspects of a child’s education that has been recommended by Charlotte Mason. She allows each child to have a real play with creativity after school. Charlotte model of school finishes in the morning, and such activities must be conducted in the afternoon.  In fact, such activities do not draw mere a fun but draw lots of real learning outcomes connected to the daily needs.

Despite, following all recommended approaches of Charlotte Mason’s educational model, the above-mentioned aspects can be focused if parents want to home school their child.

Looking Deeper: How to Measure a School’s Holistic Success Before Admission:

 - # Beyond the Billboard: Why It’s Time to Stop Judging Schools by Their Toppers Every spring, city streets and newspaper pages light up with the same familiar sights: massive, gloss-printed billboards featuring a handful of smiling students who scored a 99% or clinched top ranks. For decades, these billboards have served as the ultimate marketing tool for educational institutions, and parents routinely queue up for admissions based entirely on these extreme outliers. But if we look past the flashing lights of the top 1%, a critical question remains: **What about the rest of the school?** When we judge an institution solely by its toppers, we mistake individual genius for institutional excellence. To understand the true health, equity, and capability of a school, both parents and educators need to change the metric of success. ## The Illusion of the Outlier Toppers are, by definition, statistical outliers. Often, these students possess a high degree of intrinsic motivation, strong...

Seven key differences between Parenting in India and Dutch:

 - A Dutch mother, Ivana, recently shared her experiences living in Mumbai for nine years, highlighting seven key differences between parenting in India. She emphasises that neither approach is "better" or "worse," but rather they involve different trade-offs.  Key Differences in Parenting: According to her viral reflections on [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWJv7RLDM-z/), the primary contrasts include: * Community vs. Solo Marathon: In the Netherlands, parenting often feels like a "solo marathon". In Mumbai, she experiences a "real village" where family, neighbours, and the building community are always available to help. * Independence vs. Interdependence: Dutch culture raises children to be "fierceley independent," such as cycling to school alone at age eight. Indian parenting focuses on interdependence and being part of a larger, supportive system. * Child-Friendly Public Spaces: She notes that children in India are acce...

The Science of a Meltdown: Why Kids Can’t Listen Until They Feel Safe:

 - # Connect Before You Correct: The Golden Rule Every Parent and Teacher Needs We’ve all been there. Your child slams their backpack on the floor and snaps at you when you ask about their day. Or, a student in your third-period class loudly pushes their chair back and refuses to open their notebook, crossing their arms in open defiance. In those high-stress moments, our adult brains instantly flip into **fix-it mode**. We want to correct the behavior, enforce the rules, and demand respect. *“Pick that backpack up right now.” “Open your book or you’re going to the office.”* But when we lead with correction, we usually end up in a power struggle. Why? Because a child whose nervous system is overwhelmed cannot process logic, rules, or lessons. To guide a child out of a meltdown or a moment of defiance, we have to use a simple but profound sequence: ** We must connect before we correct .** ## The Brain Science Behind the Behavior To understand why this works, it helps to understand ho...

# Beyond the Answer Key: Teaching Children *How* to Think

 - Nurturing Thinkers, Not Memorizers:  A Guide for Educators Think back to the last time a child asked you a "Why" question. Why is the sky blue? Why do birds fly? Why do we have to sleep? Young children can ask dozens of questions an hour. It is their way of mapping out a massive, unfamiliar world. As parents and educators, our natural instinct is to give them an immediate answer. We want to be helpful, and we want to share our knowledge. But when we provide the answer right away, we accidentally turn off their mental engine. ### What to Think vs. How to Think When we give an instant answer, the child learns *what* to think. They receive a static fact to memorize. But when we pause and invite them into the discovery process, they learn *how* to think. They learn to evaluate clues, connect dots, and build logic. The magic isn't in the destination (the answer); the magic is in the journey (the thinking). ### The Four-Word Shift The next time a child brings you a curious q...

The Secret to Lifelong Genius: Understanding Fluid vs. Crystallized Intelligence:

The Science of Lifelong Intelligence: Fluid vs. Crystallized The Science of Lifelong Intelligence: Fluid vs. Crystallized Why is it that a 20-year-old can master a new app in minutes, yet a 60-year-old is often the one you turn to for a complex business strategy or a nuanced historical perspective? The answer lies in a foundational psychological theory proposed by Raymond Cattell in the 1960s (Cattell, 1963). He discovered that human intelligence isn't just one single "score"; rather, it is divided into two distinct systems: Fluid Intelligence (Gf) and Crystallized Intelligence (Gc) (Cattell, 1971). 1. Fluid Intelligence (Gf): The "Engine" Think of Fluid Intelligence as your brain's raw processing power. It is the capacity to think logically and solve problems in entirely novel situations, independent of what you’ve learned in school (Simply Psychology, 2024). The Mecha...

REOPENING THE SCHOOL- SOME SUGGESTIONS (Suggestions via- IIEP_UNESCO):

- The COVID19 pandemic has led to another crisis of reasonable ideas in order to resolve all sorts of emerging issues in front. Educational plannings in times of crisis seem to be another challenge because of the judgmental dilemma about the importance of education as well as health.  However, focusing on balancing the importance of both the aspects- education and health is focal. What and how implementable plannings could be done is the big question to be responded by most of the concerned authorities and stakeholders. Currently, school founders, principals, administrators and concerned heads are considering many ways to win this situation.  There are very key areas which the school leaders should consider- Finance, Infrastructure and Human resources. Here we are discussing some ideas and suggestions that have been addressed regarding the reopening of the schools (Please refer the full resource from UNESCO at the end of this article).  Image source: ChristopherSalem 1.
