Can Schools re-open with proper COVID19 norms? Some responses from parents and educational functionaries.
Considering the fact that the COVID19 pandemic is one of the critical and sensitive diseases, many parents and educational functionaries are scared whether the Government decision of reopening the schools from the month of July would be in a most the effective manner or be the worst contamination of virus to the children. Because research reveals in India that the decision of reopening the schools from July have been opposed by over two lakh parents.
However, most of the parents and educational functionaries have different perspectives with different reasons regarding the reopening of the schools.
Few support the view that children do not fall under a vulnerable age group: As far report and in views of the few experts, above 60 years old falls under the most vulnerable age group who are considered to be a high risk of infections. Taking this fact, schools can be reopened by maintaining social distancing as schools are the institutions of discipline and manner.
There are various views from multiple sources:
As reported from the data from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the children under 19 years of age comprised 2% of the 72,314 Covid-19 cases logged by February 20th, while a US study of 508 patients, reported no case fatalities among children, with this group accounting for less than 1% of the patients in the hospital.
· The Sole responsibility lies towards parents and schools, not students, and schools are also dependent on parents as parents have to approve whether they are comfortable and can take risk of sending their kids to the schools.
· Customized instructions for reopening schools: We can’t see any distinction in terms of Govt. guidelines of compromising with the virus based on the locations and demographic areas. We have to take various precautions and sensitivity if we are trying to unlock our schools.
· Children behaviourism differs based on the age groups-we can’t expect the same level of social distancing from all categories of children.
· No conclusive and the so-called 'authentic' data available, which can assure that children do not fall under the vulnerable age group, hence schools should not be reopened until the situation is bettered.
It would be difficult to take the decision on the national level or even state level, it has to be done based on micro-level planning based on COVID19 situation of the particular area.
