- In
the previous update we had informed you about the ban of online teaching in
Karnataka, which was extended till 7th Standard. A public interest
litigation is filed by Anumitha Sharma and several others, challenging the ban
on online classes from LKG to 5th Standard in the state (As reported
by The Indian Express on 22nd June 2020).
The
Karnataka High Court on Monday asked the state government to find a solution to
the situation. A division bench of Justice has issued this direction after
hearing the PIL.
Previously
the state had informed that the expert committee will frame guidelines for
online engagement of children. In another statement, the state has said that the decision
is taken based on the safety of health of the children.
After this situation, our CLF team started looking at the health and holistic development aspects of online teaching. Below we are providing a few of our observations.
For a situation like COVID19 pandemic, the online education system can come handy,
and it can help schools and parents to continue student learning.
In
long-run, the online teaching is not advisable, whereas to get the advantage of online
teaching, online tools can be utilized with the regular school (Regular schools in the sense, after the normalcy, is achieved). This is an analysis from a holistic development perspective in a general sense, and not for the COVID19 situation:

Some
of the challenges of online teaching:
Online
teaching lacks interpersonal skills development: The online teaching also has an
opportunity to communicate with classmates through a conference call or chat box,
but it misses a physical touch of empathy as in a real teaching environment. For
students to learn real-life communication and life skills, require strong persuasion
and verbal skills. These skills development could be a major drawback when it comes to long
run online teaching.

Lack
of one to one support: When few students cannot grasp the topic, they get
clarity with help from their fellow classmates. One to one support is a very
crucial form of learning at a school environment. In online education, students do
not get the opportunity to do group learning and support each other. Many late-blooming
students in real classroom settings get the advantage of one to one support,
particularly in subjects like Reading, Math and science.
Lack
of concentration: Lack of concentration in students is already a challenge
which schools are on toes to develop these techniques. When it comes to online
teaching, it becomes even worse for these students who lack sustained
concentration. When it comes to learning online a child if not supervised,
might log in to Facebook, Whatsapp, and games.
