The early 5 years of each child is crucial period- What could be done for children during lockdown?

--Special edition on little children during COVID-19--

The early five years of children are the most crucial and important period in human development according to child psychology and biological experts.  Because in this early period all human parts happen to be developed and hence is the period about nurturing and stimulation with relevant supportive environments. And importantly it is a common belief that 90% of a Child’s Brain Develops by Age 5, the human brain — the command centre of the entire body — is not fully developed at birth. A newborn’s brain is about a quarter of the size of the average adult brain. Incredibly, it doubles in size in the first year and keeps growing to about 80 % of adult size by age three and 90 % — nearly full-grown — by age five (Arizona state university).

For healthy brain development, a child should get a healthy and positive environment. A child should engage with the people and the environment. This requires them, to have stimulated at home, Anganwadi and Daycare centres (pre-schools) with different age-appropriate activities and materials.

Currently, there are 679 Million children worldwide under age 5 (It comes to roughly 68 Crore).

Moreover, this period can’t be ignored and we cannot take a risk of ignoring little children as it has an immense life impacts in future for the child. However, it is unfortunate that millions of children have been ignored and locked at home since all educational institutions have been closed due to the rapid outbreak of COVID19 virus. It is a matter of concern for us to lock our children at home so as to avoid them from infections but what alternative measures to be taken in order to have them developmental activities also matter of concern as well.

Considering the facts as important and need of the hour, the Early Childhood Association of India appealed HRD minister not to ignore the youngest citizens, rather, have them good environment alternatively during COVID19 lockdown.

If children cannot be sent to school, we cannot also let the learning stop. Below are a few aspects which can be initiated for learning to continue.

·         Edutainment: This could be one option if Pre-schools can provide to the children where they would have space to engage with relevant activities that would have a positive impact on the child's mental health. Edutainment consists of few games and videos connected to the child's learning.

·         Getting connected between teachers and children: The early childhood association recommends that the teachers and children be connected even during this Lockdown. So as to aware parent and the child regarding the infections of the virus with the message not to worry and take appropriate precautions, and also to advocate the holistic development aspects such as sleeping well, eating healthy food, avoiding excessive T.V etc. This could be done through some video chats. These little children cannot engage in video chats, but parents should learn from teachers and educate the children.

·         Physical and Socio-emotional activities through getting online with parents: Even without in-person contact, teachers may initiate some activities related to socio-emotional development such as storytelling sessions, singing rhyme, guess the sound, dumb charades etc. And few physical development activities can be done at home through the parents' assistance.

In fact, when it comes to video watching, at least one hour of video watching should not be harmful to the children, but this one hour also can be divided into slots example, each slot of 20 minutes.

Further, the early childhood association recommends pre-schools and daycare centres have three parts of homeschooling connections.

·         1. Teacher-child connection through ‘face-time’ video chats.

·         2. Parent-Child interaction: Give some activities which parent and child mutually can initiate. The activities should be provided with proper guidance from the Preschool.

·         3. Child independent activities: Give some activities which children do not need much help, such as simple physical exercises, home chores etc.

Seven key differences between Parenting in India and Dutch:

 - A Dutch mother, Ivana, recently shared her experiences living in Mumbai for nine years, highlighting seven key differences between parenting in India. She emphasises that neither approach is "better" or "worse," but rather they involve different trade-offs.  Key Differences in Parenting: According to her viral reflections on [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWJv7RLDM-z/), the primary contrasts include: * Community vs. Solo Marathon: In the Netherlands, parenting often feels like a "solo marathon". In Mumbai, she experiences a "real village" where family, neighbours, and the building community are always available to help. * Independence vs. Interdependence: Dutch culture raises children to be "fierceley independent," such as cycling to school alone at age eight. Indian parenting focuses on interdependence and being part of a larger, supportive system. * Child-Friendly Public Spaces: She notes that children in India are acce...

REOPENING THE SCHOOL- SOME SUGGESTIONS (Suggestions via- IIEP_UNESCO):

- The COVID19 pandemic has led to another crisis of reasonable ideas in order to resolve all sorts of emerging issues in front. Educational plannings in times of crisis seem to be another challenge because of the judgmental dilemma about the importance of education as well as health.  However, focusing on balancing the importance of both the aspects- education and health is focal. What and how implementable plannings could be done is the big question to be responded by most of the concerned authorities and stakeholders. Currently, school founders, principals, administrators and concerned heads are considering many ways to win this situation.  There are very key areas which the school leaders should consider- Finance, Infrastructure and Human resources. Here we are discussing some ideas and suggestions that have been addressed regarding the reopening of the schools (Please refer the full resource from UNESCO at the end of this article).  Image source: ChristopherSalem 1. # Beyond the Answer Key: Teaching Children *How* to Think

 - Nurturing Thinkers, Not Memorizers:  A Guide for Educators Think back to the last time a child asked you a "Why" question. Why is the sky blue? Why do birds fly? Why do we have to sleep? Young children can ask dozens of questions an hour. It is their way of mapping out a massive, unfamiliar world. As parents and educators, our natural instinct is to give them an immediate answer. We want to be helpful, and we want to share our knowledge. But when we provide the answer right away, we accidentally turn off their mental engine. ### What to Think vs. How to Think When we give an instant answer, the child learns *what* to think. They receive a static fact to memorize. But when we pause and invite them into the discovery process, they learn *how* to think. They learn to evaluate clues, connect dots, and build logic. The magic isn't in the destination (the answer); the magic is in the journey (the thinking). ### The Four-Word Shift The next time a child brings you a curious q...

School Operations Manual:

- A school is a complex organization where multiple activities should co-ordinate in sync. Each stake holder - Management, Teacher, Students, Parents and supportive staff, everyone has an important role to play. All these stake holders need to know their job, roles and responsibilities, and also the structure, policy and procedure of their work. Thus a team has come up with a 'school operations manual' to support schools in designing their school policies and procedures, which will help to strengthen the school system.  This manual outlines the significant policies and procedures covering a wide spectrum of activities in a school, starting from affiliation, curriculum planning, extra-curricular activities, value education, school administration, statutory compliances, HR, etc.  The core objective of this manual is to communicate, describe and help in implementing the best practices, policies and procedures so as to bring standardisation in our schools through collaboration. Online Schools and eclectic curriculum:

 - Online schools, while offering flexibility and accessibility, come with several disadvantages, particularly when they employ a mixed eclectic curriculum. An "eclectic curriculum" typically means drawing from various teaching philosophies and methods, aiming to personalize learning. While this sounds good in theory, in an online setting, it can lead to unique challenges. Here are the disadvantages of online school, especially one offering a mixed eclectic curriculum: I. General Disadvantages of Online School:  * Lack of Face-to-Face Interaction and Social Isolation:    * Reduced Engagement: Students miss out on spontaneous discussions, immediate feedback, and the dynamic energy of a physical classroom.    * Isolation: The absence of in-person interaction with peers and instructors can lead to feelings of loneliness, reduced motivation, and a diminished sense of community.    * Limited Social Skill Development: Opportunities for developing crucia...
